Psychological counselling

For ages 11 and up — person-centered support for teenagers and adults, from the team Hong Kong's families already trust.

Ages 11+ & adults Person-centered approach We reply within one working day

What is psychological counselling?

Counselling is a series of private, regular conversations with a trained professional, usually weekly and about an hour each. It isn't advice, and it isn't only for people in crisis. It is time set aside for you to think out loud, with someone whose only work in that hour is to understand you.

You don't need a diagnosis, or the right words for it. Most people come because something has become hard to carry alone: stress, low mood, anxiety, a relationship, a loss, a decision that won't settle. Our counselling is person-centered, which means you set the pace and the agenda, while your counsellor brings the safety, skill and honesty that help you make sense of what you're carrying.

Since 2014, our team of psychologists and counsellors has supported thousands of Hong Kong clients — teenagers finding their footing, and adults navigating the pressures of a fast-paced, competitive city.

Why it works

what the person-centered approach rests on

Counselling is not an expert telling you how to live. The person-centered approach holds that every person has the capacity to understand themselves and make their own choices, and that a safe, honest relationship is what lets that capacity start working again.

You leadYou set the pace and the subject. Your counsellor does not judge you, and does not instruct you.
The relationship is what changes thingsReal change comes from one steady, honest, professional relationship, not from advice or technique.
Every counsellor is supervisedWhoever you see, their clinical work is overseen by our doctoral-level supervisors.
The team

One steady relationship is what does the work.

The person you sit with matters more than anything else here. Whoever you see, their clinical work is overseen by our doctoral-level supervisors, and they have a team behind them to think with. You are never being held by one person alone.

Children grow past the playroom — the need for someone who listens doesn't stop. Counselling at HKPCCA is the natural continuation of the care families started with us.

Questions clients ask

the honest answers
Q.Do I need a referral or a diagnosis first?
No. You can contact us directly. Many of the people who write to us have never seen a mental health professional before, and there is no assessment to pass first.
Q.What happens in the first session?
Mostly, you talk and your counsellor listens. They will ask what brought you here and what you are hoping for, and you decide how much to say. Nothing is decided for you, and you are not committing to a course of sessions.
Q.How many sessions will I need?
It varies, and we would rather say so than give you a neat number. Some people come for a handful of sessions, others for longer. You and your counsellor review how it is going, and when to stop is your decision.
Q.My teenager doesn't want to come. What can I do?
This is common, and it is worth taking seriously: someone who has been made to come rarely gets much from counselling. Come and talk to us yourself first. A session with a parent alone is often where a way forward is found.
Q.Is what I say confidential?
Yes. What you say stays between you and your counsellor. The limits are the ones our professional codes set, mainly where someone's safety is at serious risk — and wherever it is possible, we would talk that through with you first.
